Meet emily gabelman, Lmft

Humans are built for connection, making relationships such an integral piece of our lives. Therefore, when something is going wrong in our relationships, we may feel confusion, sadness, disappointment, uncertainty, or even fear. My goal as your therapist is to provide a safe and comfortable environment where you can truly explore these emotional experiences, understand them, learn how they affect your relationships, and create change.

My journey to becoming a therapist began as an undergraduate studying Human Development and Family Science with a minor in Psychology at The Ohio State University. After taking time off to live abroad, I attended the Master of Science in Social Work program at the University of Louisville, earning a certificate in Couple and Family Therapy. I now hold licensure as an LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) in Kentucky, and an LMFT (Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist) in Illinois.

I approach therapy from a family systems standpoint, meaning that rather than just looking at the individual, I look at how the individual relates to, interacts with, and is affected by others. I am in the process of receiving certification in Emotionally Focused Therapy and have completed a four-day externship training. I have additional training in EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), TF-CBT (trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy), DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy), mindfulness, and sex therapy. Please feel free to email me or give me a call for more information about any of these models.

My unique dual professional identity as both a Social Worker and a Marriage & Family Therapist allows me to have a broader understanding of the larger systems affecting my clients in addition to clinical skills. Helping clients understand how these larger systems affect their mental health and relationships is an important component of my work.

I also have experience working with a very diverse clientele. I've spent a great deal of time abroad, interacting with people of various nationalities and cultures. I am LGBTQIA friendly and have significant experience working with this population. I am also sex positive and encourage my clients to discuss sex openly depending on their level of comfort. My clients come from a full spectrum of socio-economic statuses and belief systems.
