Workshop 3: Mental Illness in Couples

30.00

March 29th 2019, 11am-2pm

Presenters: Grace Norberg & Thomas Bateman

Often couples come to therapy because one or both people are diagnosed with a mental illness, or they discover this in the process of the therapy. This creates sequences within the couple that arise as responses to the symptoms one person experiences, and can affect the dynamics of relational therapy because one person may feel like the “identified patient”. We will learn about how common diagnoses such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and personality disorders affect couple therapy, and discuss how to psychoeducate clients, address the relational sequences that occur as a result of mental illness, and helpful interventions.
